Randy maybe you should look elsewhere for details on Peru's nightlife. Last I checked this was a page for info on bank accounts.

Randy is interestingly in the wrong forum and pursuing his own interests for that matter. Why not be inquisitive online? If you are on and off Lima, and have to renew your temporary regularly, how about getting a less permanent VISA? That way, you will save yourself the hassle of going round immigration offices. Besides, you might be too busy and forget.Opening a bank account should be easy, just walk into the customer care desks of the many banks there.

The best way to exchange information would be to be part of an expat association or take part in a forum that addresses issues in a particular country. As is usual in many discussion forums there will be the FAQs that will have already been answered and that will even make things less hectic. How is the general state of Peru's banking industry? Interest rates, minimum balance, access to a VISA debit/credit card.....

You have been in the country on and off for two years so I expect you have noted a thing or two about the whole Peruvian banking industry. I think opening a bank account should not be any hard if you possess the necessary documents. It also depends on your nationality and whether there exist slight difference in requirements.
Try walking into a bank of choice and I am sure you will find help.

I know for a fact that Interbank will give you an account if you have 2 valid form of photo ID - in my case my passport and drivers licence. Hope this helps!

I am a traveler and used to visit the beautiful country of Peru often. And during my visit, i make sure that i have something for my friends when i come back home. The problem is, i am having troubles carrying cash with me. And just like the original poster, my concern would be about the banking system in the country. Can i open an account there? Thanks a lot.

I've been in the same situation with the first poster. In my experience I always bring some cash up to 1, 500 for immediate needs and transactions that don't accept my visa or mastercard. Banks there usually accepts transactions from these international financial institution but of course with some fees. Some shops and restaurants here also accepts US dollar or the card mentioned above. But its still best to have some of their local currency on hand so you could pay for the right price they would ask.

There are so many reasons to have a bank account for the purpose of being in the 21st century. So much can be transacted with this little bit of technology. The advantages have to be noted from the time you get it.
