A question though, is it safe to explore or trek the Peruvian jungle? Are there any mosquitoes carrying malaria in those areas? Can you guarantee our safe passage through the jungle?

Ralph I think you should check the jungle rain forest expeditions above.

Does anyone have any stories of their own jungle expeditions?

I dont think I would ever be able to go into the jungle. I would be so scared of getting ate.

Usually if you're traveling to any sort of area with large amounts of jungle, you are required to get vaccinated before even leaving the country, especially the US. I had a friend who had traveled to Thailand (not that its the same) a few years back and he had to be vaccinated to make sure that mosquito diseases wouldn't happen.

Hi, folks... They have parasites there that get into your skin and live there and fester and get infected. You also have small needle-like fish that when you bathe in a river enter your anus and wreck your insides. Interested in going to the jungle?

If mosquitoes are what you are afraid of, then take and carry anti-malarial tablets. You also need to find out which diseases are prone in the place and what safeguard you can take.

You do not need to do much to go for an expedition. You can get a travel agency to handle the logistics as you and your friends just organize yourselves.

I went for an expedition that doubled up as an awarding activity. In our country it is referred to as The President's Award Scheme that falls under The Duke of Edinburgh's Award. It was a hilarious experience though you need to be realllly fit.

Any kind of expedition needs adequate planning. You do not want regretting taking a certain path in the course of your sojourning. The hard fact is that not everyone that decides to go for such a 'hike' will make it to the last day. Adequate preparation, both in physical and psychological aspects, are important.

Going through the jungle can be an interesting experience. I would not dare do that until I am sure no wild animals exist.

To go for adventure means to take the risk. IN any kind of adventure there's always the risk. If there is no risk, you can no longer call it an adventure.

Going to the jungle to explore or to have an adventure is one of the riskiest form of adventure. But if one is daring and prepared enough to take the risk that's possibly awaiting for him in the jungle then let him be. There is only one thing that one needs to consider in taking those risky kind of expeditions - to prepare everything that needs to be done. If I say everything, it means all the necessary preparations.

"jungle enthusiast"

You don't need vaccinations for malaria in Peru, anti-malarial tablets are sufficient. Other diseases such as dengue fever might occur, though. Check your doctor before traveling.

Otherwise, the Amazonian jungle is not really that dangerous (the streets of any big Latin American city are likely to be much more so). But of course you should only take locally organized tours to get to the jungle. Wandering out there by yourself is obviously not a good idea.

In Peru, you can visit the Amazon forests in both Iquitos and Madre de Dios regions. The latter includes the popular Tambopata and the famous Manu reserves.

I'm a bit confused here. What is the different between a rainforest and a jungle? The only jungle that I know is the Amazon Jungle. Why do we call them different terms when they are almost the same? They both have dense vegetation, ecodiversity, and a lot of animals.

Comment #14 Vischel (63.176.159.225) - 02/03/10 17:57

Well, let me put it this way, rain forest is derived from the word rain and forest so expect that the are is usually marshy, swampy, and damp; while a jungle is usually inhabited by wild animals and is generally or usually dry but this does not mean that it is a complete dessert (do have a common sense here). Though both may often experience frequent rain showers I believe that rain forests maintains more water or dampness rather than a jungle.
